Imagine waking up every day with a fire in your soul and a clear sense of purpose in your life. Have you found your 'why' yet? I first stumbled upon this concept by watching a Ted Talk shared by Simon Sinek, a renowned British-American author, motivational speaker, and organization consultant, who discusses the importance of defining a core purpose (the 'why') or reason for doing what you love to do!
While some discover their 'why' almost instantly, others unearth it along their journey. I'm still learning to discover my 'why' through a recent entreprenuer program on behalf of the Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Northwest, but I'm excited to share that I'm getting closer and closer to finding what serves as a powerful motivator to guide both my personal and professional aspects in life. When you are able to identify your core purpose, you align yourself in becoming the perfect version of yourself.
Finding your 'why' refers to discovering your purpose, passion, and the deeper meaning behind your actions and choices. Here are some helpful steps to organically finding your 'why':
Self-Reflection: Sit back and reflect on your life experiences, values, strengths, and interests. Think about the moments you felt most fulfilled, proud, or excited!
Identifying Core Values: Defining your core values, which are the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and behavior.
Explore Your Passions: Engage in activities that bring you joy and make you feel alive. Do you get the feeling that you are lost in time doing what you love to do?
Consider Impact: What kind of impact do you want to have on the world and how do these positive changes relate to your personal life, the community, or the bigger picture.
Seek Inspiration: Read books, listen to podcasts, or engage with content that resonates with you. Learning about the journey and experiences of others can provide you insight on your own 'why'.
Seek Feedback: Inquire about your strengths among your friends, family, and peers and see what they think you are passionate about.
Experiment & Reflect: Allow yourself to try new and different things and see how the activity aligns with your core values, interests, and desired impact.
Journaling: Is it helpful for you to write your thoughts, feelings, or experiences down on paper? This may help you identify patterns and insights over time.
Visualize your Ideal Future: How do you see yourself in the future. What does your ideal life look like? What type of work will you be doing? And, how would you be contributing to the world?
Embrace the journey: Finding your 'way' is often a journey over a period of time. You may not know your 'why' but stay open to new experiences, growth, and changing perspectives.
Stay Authentic: Your 'why' should resonate with your true self
Keep in mind that uncovering your 'why' is a personal and continuous journey, which may span months for some and even years for others. Embrace the journey by being open to new opportunities, and in time, you'll discover what aligns perfectly with your path that will lead you to your 'why'.
